Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Nightmares

What is CBT-N?

CBT for Nightmares is an evidence-based, short-term, multi-component, behavioral treatment for chronic nightmares.

How does CBT-N work?

CBT-N works by combining psychoeducation, sleep habit modification, relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and imagery rehearsal therapy.

What does CBT-N help?

CBT-N helps to address persistent nightmares with both identifiable causes (e.g. trauma-related) and idiopathic, (unknown) causes. In the context of CBT-N, a nightmare is defined as a dream that cause distress to the point of awakening and is remembered by the dreamer. A nightmare can prompt sufferers to avoid going to sleep for fear they will experience a nightmare, to experience disrupted sleep due to awakening from a nightmare, and to wake early from sleep. Nightmare sufferers can experience a wide range of associated symptoms such as concentration problems, irritability, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
